St. Peter's Health is working to raise awareness about prostate cancer and highlighting some new treatment tools available at the hospital.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, and the Centers for Disease Control reports about 13 out of every 100 American men will get it in their lifetime.
Doctor Kevin Brown, a Urologist with St. Peter's, said it's most commonly diagnosed in men over 65. Prostate cancer doesn't always come with noticeable symptoms, but that's why Dr. Brown said it's especially important to get screened.
St. Peter's recently purchased a specialized robotic system that Brown said can be used to treat prostate cancer more effectively.
"Just like a surgeon would traditionally use a scalpel to perform a procedure, we can do the same procedure with smaller, less invasive incisions and more precision using the robot," Dr. Brown said.
Dr. Brown said the new robot makes surgery safer and also reduces recovery times.
